Percentage Calculator
The Percentage Calculator answers the three questions people ask most: what is X% of a number, what percentage one number is of another, and the percentage increase or decrease between two values.
The three calculations
- Percent of a number - 15% of 240 = 240 × 0.15 = 36. Handy for tips and taxes.
- X is what percent of Y - 36 is what percent of 240? (36 ÷ 240) × 100 = 15%.
- Percentage change - from 200 to 250 is a 25% increase: (250 − 200) ÷ 200 × 100.
Everyday uses
Use it to work out a sale price, a restaurant tip, a grade, sales tax, or how much a price has risen year on year. For shopping specifically, remember that a 20% discount followed by a further 10% is not 30% off - it is 28% off, because the second cut applies to the already-reduced price.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate a discount price?
Multiply the original price by the discount percentage to get the saving, then subtract it. For 20% off $50: 50 × 0.20 = $10 saved, so you pay $40.
How is percentage change calculated?
Subtract the old value from the new value, divide by the old value, and multiply by 100. A negative result is a decrease.
Why do two stacked discounts not simply add up?
Each discount applies to the running total, not the original price. 20% then 10% off equals 28% off overall, not 30%.
Can it calculate percentage increase for a raise or markup?
Yes. Enter the original and final amounts and it returns the percentage increase, which works for pay rises, markups, and growth rates.
