A solar calendar, and what follows from it

The Tamil calendar is solar: months begin when the sun enters a new zodiacal sign, which is why Tamil New Year falls around 14 April every year and Pongal around 14 January, rather than drifting like lunar festivals do. Month lengths vary between 29 and 32 days because the Earth moves at different speeds through its elliptical orbit, so the sun genuinely spends longer in some signs than others. Years are also named rather than only numbered, cycling through sixty names before repeating — a system shared with several Indian calendars and used to date temple inscriptions within a sixty-year window.

The Thirukkural

Thiruvalluvar's 1,330 couplets are arranged in three sections and 133 chapters of exactly ten couplets each. What makes the work unusual is that it appeals to no deity, scripture or religious authority — its arguments are made from reason and consequence, which is why followers of several religions have claimed it and it belongs exclusively to none. Each couplet is seven words, four in the first line and three in the second, which is why it is so densely quotable and so difficult to translate. More than half the text concerns statecraft, governance and society rather than personal virtue.

Typing and reading Tamil

Tamil is an abugida: each consonant carries an inherent vowel that a mark modifies, and 12 vowels combined with 18 consonants produce 247 characters in total. Transliteration is not a letter swap, because Tamil does not distinguish voiced from unvoiced consonants in writing while distinguishing sounds English does not — three separate l sounds, including the retroflex ழ that gives the language's own name its varied spellings. Tamil also maintains distinct literary and spoken registers, which is why a word heard in conversation often cannot be found in a dictionary that indexes the literary form.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a Tamil keyboard to type Tamil?

No. The transliteration tool lets you type phonetically in English letters and converts to Tamil script.

Does the Thirukural include an English translation?

Yes. Each couplet is shown in Tamil with a Tamil explanation and an English translation.

What is the Tamil calendar used for?

It shows the Panchangam details - Tamil month, Tithi, and Nakshatra - used for festivals and auspicious planning.

Why does Tamil New Year fall on nearly the same date each year?

Because the Tamil calendar is solar rather than lunar. Months begin when the sun enters a new zodiacal sign, so dates stay aligned with the Gregorian calendar instead of drifting about eleven days a year.

Is the Thirukkural a religious text?

No. It makes no appeal to any deity or scripture, arguing entirely from reason and consequence. That is why it has been claimed by followers of several religions and belongs exclusively to none.

Why can't I find a Tamil word in the dictionary?

Usually because it is inflected — Tamil attaches case, number and tense as suffixes, so search the root. It may also be a spoken form; dictionaries index the literary register, which often differs.
