Pincode Lookup: How It Works
A PIN code identifies a postal delivery area in India. The six digits are not arbitrary — each position carries meaning, and reading them tells you roughly where in the country an address sits before you look anything up.
What the digits mean
| Digit | Meaning |
|---|---|
| 1st | Postal region (1–9) |
| 2nd | Sub-region within it |
| 3rd | Sorting district |
| 4th–6th | The specific delivery post office |
| First digit | Region |
|---|---|
| 1 | Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Chandigarh |
| 2 | Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand |
| 3 | Rajasthan, Gujarat, Daman & Diu, Dadra & Nagar Haveli |
| 4 | Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Goa |
| 5 | Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka |
| 6 | Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Puducherry, Lakshadweep |
| 7 | West Bengal, Odisha, north-eastern states, Andaman & Nicobar |
| 8 | Bihar, Jharkhand |
| 9 | Army Postal Service and Field Post Offices |
Region 9 is worth knowing about: it serves military personnel, and an address in that range routes through the Army Postal Service regardless of where the recipient physically is.
One code, many localities
A PIN identifies a delivery post office, not a neighbourhood. In cities, one code frequently covers several localities, and large institutions — universities, industrial estates, government complexes — sometimes have a code of their own. Conversely, a locality large enough may span several codes.
This is why a PIN alone is insufficient for delivery. The full address still needs the locality, landmark where customary, and the recipient's name.
Post office types
| Type | Role |
|---|---|
| Head Post Office | Largest; full range of services |
| Sub Post Office | Most services, reports to a head office |
| Branch Post Office | Smallest, typically rural, limited services |
Common practical uses
- E-commerce serviceability — couriers check the PIN before accepting an order, and rural codes are often served by a limited set of carriers.
- Form validation — checking a PIN matches the stated district catches transposition errors.
- Delivery estimates — distance and serviceability both derive from the code.
- KYC and address verification — a PIN inconsistent with the stated city is a standard flag.
Why lookups sometimes disagree
New codes are introduced as areas develop, and post offices are occasionally reorganised, merged or renamed. Public datasets are updated at different intervals, so two sources can legitimately differ for a recently changed area. For anything consequential, confirm against India Post's own directory.
A related and common issue: a PIN that is valid but no longer matches the locality on an old document, because the area was reassigned. The document is not wrong; it is out of date.
