About Text Tools

Writers, students, and developers use these tools to hit a word count, stay within a character limit, switch text between cases, sort or de-duplicate lists, compare two versions, and check readability. Handy picks include the Word Counter, Case Converter, Diff Checker, and Writing Analyzer.

Everything runs locally in your browser, so even long or sensitive text is processed on your device and never uploaded.

The invisible characters that break everything

Text copied from PDFs, spreadsheets and websites arrives carrying baggage you cannot see: trailing spaces, non-breaking spaces, tabs where spaces are expected, and Windows line endings. None of it is visible and all of it breaks comparison, deduplication and sorting. The non-breaking space is the worst offender — it renders identically to a normal space and is a different character, so two strings that look identical compare as different.

Word processors also silently replace straight quotes with typographic ones and hyphens with dashes. This is desirable in prose and destructive elsewhere: a curly apostrophe in a code snippet is a syntax error, and an em dash in an SMS switches the whole message to Unicode encoding, cutting the segment limit from 160 characters to 70.

Order of operations matters

When cleaning data: normalise line endings, then whitespace, then trim each line, then remove blanks, then convert case, then deduplicate, then sort. Deduplicating before trimming leaves phantom duplicates behind, and sorting before normalising strands whitespace-prefixed lines at the top of the list.

Counting is not as simple as it looks

Word counts differ between tools because hyphenated compounds, numbers and footnotes are handled differently — variations of one or two percent are normal, which matters when a submission has a strict limit. Character counts have a deeper complication: a visible character is not one unit of storage. A family emoji displays as one glyph, occupies seven code points and 25 UTF-8 bytes, which is why a name that is clearly under a fifty-character limit can be rejected by a fifty-byte database field.

Every text tool here processes in your browser, so unpublished drafts and confidential material are never transmitted.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Is my text uploaded to a server?

No. All text tools process your content in your browser, so nothing is sent or stored.

Is there a limit on how much text I can paste?

You can paste long documents; processing happens instantly and is limited only by your browser.

Can these tools help with SEO writing?

Yes. The character counter, word counter, and readability analyzer are useful for meta descriptions, titles, and content.

Why do two identical-looking lines not match?

Usually a trailing space or a non-breaking space, which renders identically to a normal space but is a different character. Normalise whitespace before comparing, deduplicating or sorting.

Why does code copied from a document fail?

Word processors replace straight quotes with curly typographic ones, and a curly apostrophe is a syntax error in every programming language. Convert them back before running the code.

Why does my word count differ from my word processor?

Tools handle hyphenated compounds, numbers, footnotes and captions differently, so variations of one or two percent are normal. For a strict submission limit, use the count your institution specifies.
