Stopwatch / Pomodoro: How It Works

A stopwatch measures elapsed time; a Pomodoro timer imposes a structure on it. The second is the more interesting tool, because the constraint — a fixed block with a hard stop — does more for concentration than any amount of intention.

The Pomodoro structure

PhaseDurationPurpose
Focus block25 minutesSingle task, no interruptions
Short break5 minutesStep away from the screen
Repeat×4One full cycle
Long break15–30 minutesGenuine recovery

The 25-minute figure is not special — it was simply the interval its originator's kitchen timer measured. What matters is that the block is short enough to start without dread and long enough to reach depth. Many people work better at 45 or 50 minutes with a 10-minute break; developers and writers often find 25 minutes ends just as they have loaded the problem into working memory.

Why timed blocks work

The break is not optional

The most common way this technique fails is skipping breaks during a productive block. It feels efficient and is not: sustained focus degrades measurably over hours without recovery, and the deficit compounds across a day. The break also needs to be a genuine change of mode — standing, walking, looking at something more than six metres away. Switching from work to a phone screen provides no recovery at all, because the demand on attention is identical.

Lap timing

Beyond focus work, split and lap timing serve a range of uses: interval training, where work and rest periods must be consistent; cooking, where several items finish at different times; and any process where you want to know how long each stage actually took rather than the total. Recording laps turns a stopwatch into a crude measurement instrument, which is usually more useful than the final number.

Accuracy

A browser-based timer is accurate to a few milliseconds under normal conditions, which is far beyond what any human-scale task requires. Two caveats: browsers throttle timers in background tabs to save power, so a timer in a hidden tab may drift or pause, and precise measurement of anything sub-second belongs to purpose-built equipment rather than a web page. For focus blocks, workouts and cooking, none of this matters.

Making it stick

  1. Decide the single task before starting the timer, not after.
  2. Put the phone out of reach, not merely face down.
  3. Keep a notepad for intruding thoughts so they can be deferred without being lost.
  4. Count completed blocks rather than hours worked — it is a far more honest measure of a day.
  5. Adjust the interval to your work. The structure is the point; the specific number is not.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why 25 minutes?
Largely arbitrary — it was the interval on the kitchen timer the technique's originator used. What matters is a block short enough to start easily and long enough to reach depth. Many people do better at 45 or 50 minutes.
What if I am in flow when the timer ends?
Finishing the thought is reasonable, but taking the break is usually the better long-term choice. Sustained focus degrades over hours without recovery, and the deficit accumulates across the day.
Does the timer keep running if I switch tabs?
It continues, but browsers throttle background tabs to save power, so a hidden timer can drift or update late. Keeping the tab visible, or enabling a notification, gives the most reliable result.
What should I do during the break?
Change mode — stand, walk, look at something far away. Switching from work to a phone gives no recovery, because the demand on your attention is essentially the same.
How many focus blocks can I sustain in a day?
Most people manage somewhere between eight and twelve blocks of genuinely focused work, and fewer on demanding cognitive tasks. Counting completed blocks is a more honest measure of a day than counting hours at a desk.
How accurate is a browser timer?
Accurate to a few milliseconds in an active tab, which far exceeds what focus work, exercise or cooking requires. For sub-second scientific measurement, purpose-built equipment is appropriate.
